Embarrasing and Nostalgic: Sweet Secrets

These are the girl toys I coveted and owned with pride. I don't remember the narration being so creepy and I don't want to imagine how much hairspray is in that girls bangs.

Young Filly

Holy shit, it's like Summer and Spring just hit me all at once.
One week of Tokyo left, then to Hawaii or whatever.
I dunno, feeling alive... punching the air.

Tokyo Underground Music: JON (犬)

JON (犬) aka. JON kaku inu aka. Jon the dog

web
myspace

I just saw Jon play in Koenji at Enban (円盤) on Wednesday night. SHe is haunting and lovely. The scene is as follows: printed map for Enban says "next to the yakitori place". This particular alley in Koenji is nothing by yakitoriya and izakaya, this is a needle + hay stack scenario. After taking a break to have a drink we finally found the place on the second story of an apartment building. We opened the door just a crack and hear the voice of Jon, rounding the corner I found myself 3 feet from Jon in dark, yellow light. The organ melodies, baby voice, and yellow wolf eyes gave me flashes of David Lynch films. She whisper enchants the audience, and I was left hypnotized ready to follow her back to her den.

SHe's playing again on Monday 07/21 in Shinjuku, go to her site for directions.

Exploration: the rec room

The apartment building I live in is a co-op.
On the first floor, down this log corridor is an
"all purpose room" as we call it in the states.
I found it unlocked, so I creeped trough the door
and out of my slippers.

Obsession: This DOG! (Shiba Inu)

On my way home from work I see this little guy. He resides on a fire escape in Daikanyama. It's not like he's neglected, the owners just let him sit out there to people watch their little alley way. He is a Shiba Inu, a Japanese breed. He's beautiful, smart, and seems quite squishable. Someday I will touch this dog... someday.... just look at him taunting you with his floppy paw.

PS. Click on the photos to "go big" and see everyone of his adorable hairs.. and his eyebrows.

Nagisa Nite: I Can't Believe I missed it again

Nagisa Nite just payed Tokyo about 10 days ago and I missed it.

Listen to "こんな感じ / Feel" album and feel the pangs of young love in the summertime.

Stealing From Friends: Michael Guidetti

"The most talented person I know"- Dustin Wong
"He has vision"- Mr. Megane
"I knew him when he was just a kid"- angel

I'm lucky to know this guy. We can talk nerdy and about emotions
for real. He is the mastermind behind the Skeleton Sweet podcast,
which I sometimes contribute to and an internet genius. Yellow
Pear Book is amazing, go get one. Other than
that, he's sweet, kind, hilarious, incredibly smart, and has
the squishiest nose you have ever seen in your life.

Otaku: this american girl

Otaku can roughly translate to "nerd", "geek", "weirdo". Any person who is obsessed with anime, manga, toys, whatever. I can partially identify as otaku. My otaku-ness is pure and absolute to just a few including Moomin, Unico and Uruseiyatsura (うる星やつら).I cannot explain why I am drawn to these things, but my soul just attaches to these stories and animations in a very urgent way.

Recently, I have been trying to read Uruseiyatsura (うる星やつら) in Japanese, I do come across some problems when trying to translate words like "slut" and "floozy". See the opening credits above. The main character is Ramu, she's a female oni (demon) she falls in love with a human and loves him so much she stays around ultimately ruining his relationships with normal human women. Men love this comic because Ramu is wild, crazy, and super sexy so much more exciting than the human women. I love this comic for the same reasons, women can identify with Ramu because at times we will feel the urge to cut a bitch if she gets to close to our dudes... you know what I mean?

Tokyo: Love affair again and again

I've been traveling again, and this is the first full weekend I have had to myself in a long time.
I am in love with Japan again. I know all the problems of this country, and the complications of living alone here but still... this is the place I have always wanted to be regardless of how alone I am. Today was pure magic, hunting for some crazy record for Mikey with no luck, I came back to Nakano to nerds-ville. Sifting through the Manadrake shops I found this amazing animation cell of some prince that looks like anime Robert Plant.

I rung the bell for the shop staff to unlock the glass case and he was mine. Half heartedly I asked if they had any "Unico" cells, the shop girl checked in back while I riffled through more animation cells. The woman behind me was asking why all the foreigners (read: gaijin/racist slur) are buying animation cells. The other shop girl said, "they must be collectors". The racist was convinced I had no idea what I was looking for, but she doesn't understand what it means for me to find this cell.

I have lived in Japan for 4 years and counting. The same neighborhood the same otaku shops I visit every weekend looking for this one gem. Before I knew it, there it was...

Unico, in all his tiny cuteness fighting against the ultimate evil. Inspiration on celluloid. These are the things I love about Tokyo, and I told the shop lady that... she just thought I was crazy.

Because I'm American

And I hate Walmart, and Kmart, and all of those marts
that put private shops out of business and brings false hopes of
"real jobs" to rural America while draining the cultural life out
of every highway interchange and local supermarket while
serving up American monoculture of Hannah Montanas,
Nascar, and generic crocs.

East to Far East: Singapore "some stuff I ate"

Here's some stuff I ate in Singapore.

Some of it was good, some of it was bad.
Most of the things show here are good, but I
learned that I do not like Malaysian food.

I mean, creamed corn on shaved ice???
