My dear friend from college, Kyle, made his way to the blustery east coast. As a native Californian I was a bit worried as to how he would react to the temperature drop as well as the Baltimore lighting.
It was a lovely weekend of old friends, giggling, drinking, and most of all eating.
In 1999, I heard Boards of Canada for the first time. On vinyl, on a mattress, on the floor of my boyfriend's bedroom. Before this time, I was more interested in Detroit techno and Chicago House. This was something new for me. The Music Has the Right to Children album artwork blew me away. Haunting and familiar, much like the music. This one night started a 3 year obsession. I hunted down rare issue prints of various BOC albums, Hi Scores, Twoism, ect. The first time I used Ebay. I sent them letters in response to the cryptic image they had on their website.
Then I slowly moved away from it, in favor of The Smiths and Devendra Banhart. After college, I wanted desperately to go to Japan. Move there in fact. So, I took my Boards of Canada records and rarities and sold them all to a CD Warehouse in Toledo, Ohio.
I made it to Japan, and have been living there ever since. I just found the BOC albums on i-tunes, and I bought the entire catalog again... almost. It was warm, and familiar. Resonating with me again. Of course it is MP3'd tin-y sounding, but I just trying to make due.
